Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge lead the cast of this revival as as Georges and Albin respectively, with Fred Applegate as Edouard Dindon/M. Renaud, Veanne Cox as Mme. Dindon/Mme. Renaud, Chris Hoch as Francis, Elena Shaddow as Anne, A.J. Shively as Jean-Michel, Christine Andreas as Jacqueline, Robin de Jesús as Jacob, Heather Lindell as Colette, Cheryl Stern as Babette, Bill Nolte as Tabarro and David Nathan Perlow as Etienne. The Cagelles include Nick Adams as Angelique, Sean A. Carmon as Phaedra, Nicholas Cunningham as Hanna, Sean Patrick Doyle as Chantal, Logan Keslar as Bitelle and Terry Lavell as Mercedes. Also in the cast is Dale Hensley as a waiter, while Christophe Caballero, Todd Lattimore and Caitlin Mundth are the swings.

La Cage aux Folles, which features a book by Harvey Fierstein – based on the play by Jean Poiret – and a score by Jerry Herman, is directed by Terry Johnson with choreography by Lynne Page. The second revival of the show in the past decade, the previous incarnation having won the 2005 Tony award for Best Revival of a Musical despite a decidedly mixed reception, this production looks like a hot contender for that same award in 2010.

While the 2004-2005 season was a poor one for revivals, this past season has offered some strong competition, but this reconceptualization of the material in this case seems to be the factor that might sway the voters’ hands. This was certainly what propelled the production to Olivier Award-winning status, despite the reservations of Arthur Laurents, who said in a recent interview with OUT magazine that this production was cheap and homophobic in comparison with his Tony-award winning direction of the original production, which infamously beat out the far superior Sunday in the Park with George for the Best Musical prize of the 1983/1984 season. Laurents, of course, knows how homophobia materializes in the arts: one only needs to look to his screenplay for The Turning Point to see that. But I digress. We’ll have to wait for the Tony Awards later this year to see what happens there.

Based on Sweet’s 1991 album, the “boy-meets-boy” musical is described as follows on the Berkeley Rep website:

Romance unfolds in a new musical…. Meeting in homeroom. Cruising through town. Holding hands. Cheering from the stands. That awkward first kiss. In the world premiere of Girlfriend at Berkeley Rep, boy meets boy. It’s an eternal story turned upside down, a dual-Romeo duet… that’s innocent – and Sweet.

Throwback Thursday: “Flash, Bang, Wallop!” from HALF A SIXPENCE

HALF A SIXPENCE

Above: The movie poster for HALF A SIXPENCE

Hands up those of you who know the catchy number “Flash, Bang, Wallop!” from the musical, Half a Sixpence.

Whether you do or not, you’re sure to enjoy this performance of the song from the 1963 Royal Variety Performance. All right, my empathies lie with those of you that find Tommy Steele annoying. I do too, but have a listen to the song itself.

A kind of cousin to “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins, it is as rousing and energetic, with a great set of lyrics that all are a variation of the central image of the song: the wedding photograph.

Rosie O’Donnell and THE KID: a Dark Nights Discussion

The Kid is a new musical based on based on Dan Savage’s The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Get Pregnant being presented by The New Group for a world premiere run later this month. With previews for the show (which features a book by Michael Zam, music by Andy Monroe and lyrics by Jack Lechner) starting on 16 April in a production directed by Scott Elliott, with musical staging by Josh Prince, The New Group will host a discussion dealing with the major theme of the show: “The Modern Family: A Discussion of Gay Adoption” on the following Sunday. The evening will be hosted by Rosie O’ Donnell, who had the following to say about the show in a statement about the event on Playbill yesterday:

When I heard The New Group was doing a musical on gay adoption, I came down to check it out for myself. I thought, I know a thing or two about this topic. But I was blown away: here was the first show that really showed what it’s like for a gay person who wants to be a parent – but also what it’s like for anyone going through this crazy but thrilling process. Of course, no two adoption stories are the same, so I look forward to talking about what our panel’s experiences have been. In a country where there are states where gay adoption is illegal (and many more that won’t say that it IS legal), it’s time to hear those stories.

The panel will also include Terry Boggis, Jack Lechner and Josh Lehrer. More information about the event can be found at The New Group’s website.

LOVE NEVER DIES Broadway Opening Postponed

The Really Useful Group has released a statement confirming the rumours that the scheduled opening of Love Never Dies in November has been postponed until spring 2011. Here’s an extract from the statement outlining the reasons why:

The original opening date, planned for November 2010, was set before Lloyd Webber was diagnosed with prostate cancer last fall. Although the cancer has been eradicated, there have been post-operative problems. These have been aggravated by recent air travel and Lloyd Webber’s doctors have requested that he does not take any further long-haul flights for the time being and until the problem has been investigated. This prevents him attending auditions and being part of the pre-production process in New York on the original schedule

Andrew Lloyd Webber is currently appearing in the BBC television series, Over the Rainbow, in which he is looking to cast the lead role of Dorothy for his new production of The Wizard of Oz. Andrew performs weekly on live British television which was also a commitment undertaken before the prostate cancer was diagnosed. This complication, together with the doctors’ advice, has made it impossible to keep to the original Broadway schedule for Love Never Dies. Therefore, the decision has been made to move The Wizard of Oz forward in London and to schedule the Broadway premiere of Love Never Dies for 2011 thus allowing Andrew the freedom to travel to New York and oversee the audition and rehearsal process later in the year.

Lloyd Webber, in the same statement, comments on the situation:

I am extremely frustrated that I cannot travel to New York for the time being. I will be focusing my time on producing The Wizard of Oz in London now, and plan to be available for the creative process of bringing Love Never Dies to Broadway as soon as possible. I’m grateful that Jack and Jerry’s schedules can allow me to do this juggling act.

As reflected in Lloyd Webber’s statement, the new date takes into account the schedules of Jack O’Brien (the show’s director) and Jerry Mitchell (its choreographer). The show will still open in the Neil Simon Theatre as expected.

Whatever the reason, I hope that the extra time gained by postponing the opening will be used to fix the show’s many problems (some of which I’ve outlined here at Musical Cyberspace in a track-by-track commentary of the original (studio) cast recording.
