GIRLFRIEND at Berkeley Rep

As one old Berkeley Rep production (American Idiot) tiptoes towards its opening night on Broadway, Girlfriend, a new musical with a book by Todd Almond and music and lyrics by Matthew Sweet makes its debut in California tonight. Based on Sweet’s 1991 album, the “boy-meets-boy” musical is described as follows on the Berkeley Rep website:

Romance unfolds in a new musical…. Meeting in homeroom. Cruising through town. Holding hands. Cheering from the stands. That awkward first kiss. In the world premiere of Girlfriend at Berkeley Rep, boy meets boy. It’s an eternal story turned upside down, a dual-Romeo duet… that’s innocent – and Sweet.

Here are some photographs from the production, courtesy of Kevin Berne.

Throwback Thursday: “Flash, Bang, Wallop!” from HALF A SIXPENCE

HALF A SIXPENCE

Above: The movie poster for HALF A SIXPENCE

Hands up those of you who know the catchy number “Flash, Bang, Wallop!” from the musical, Half a Sixpence.

Whether you do or not, you’re sure to enjoy this performance of the song from the 1963 Royal Variety Performance. All right, my empathies lie with those of you that find Tommy Steele annoying. I do too, but have a listen to the song itself.

A kind of cousin to “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins, it is as rousing and energetic, with a great set of lyrics that all are a variation of the central image of the song: the wedding photograph.

Rosie O’Donnell and THE KID: a Dark Nights Discussion

The Kid is a new musical based on based on Dan Savage’s The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Get Pregnant being presented by The New Group for a world premiere run later this month. With previews for the show (which features a book by Michael Zam, music by Andy Monroe and lyrics by Jack Lechner) starting on 16 April in a production directed by Scott Elliott, with musical staging by Josh Prince, The New Group will host a discussion dealing with the major theme of the show: “The Modern Family: A Discussion of Gay Adoption” on the following Sunday. The evening will be hosted by Rosie O’ Donnell, who had the following to say about the show in a statement about the event on Playbill yesterday:

When I heard The New Group was doing a musical on gay adoption, I came down to check it out for myself. I thought, I know a thing or two about this topic. But I was blown away: here was the first show that really showed what it’s like for a gay person who wants to be a parent – but also what it’s like for anyone going through this crazy but thrilling process. Of course, no two adoption stories are the same, so I look forward to talking about what our panel’s experiences have been. In a country where there are states where gay adoption is illegal (and many more that won’t say that it IS legal), it’s time to hear those stories.

The panel will also include Terry Boggis, Jack Lechner and Josh Lehrer. More information about the event can be found at The New Group’s website.

Free Readings of IN LOVE WITH JOBIM

Three free readings In Love with Jobim, a new jukebox musical that forms part of the York Theatre Company’s Developmental Reading Series, will be held starting tonight. There will be two evening readings at 19:00 today and tomorrow, with an additional reading at 15:00 tomorrow afternoon.

With a concept and book by Ernest Chambers, the show uses the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim (with English lyrics by Norman Gimbel, Gene Lees, Ray Gilbert, Jon Hendricks, Jessie Cavanaugh and Jobim himself) to tell, according to the press materials, ‘the story of a love triangle full of humor and heart’. Jobim’s most well known song is probably “The Girl from Ipanema” and the show includes that popular song as well as other hits from this Brazilian songwriter, such as “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars” and “One Note Samba”. The cast features Ron Bohmer, Tim Jerome, Jennifer Sheehan and Nick Spangler.

LOVE NEVER DIES Broadway Opening Postponed

The Really Useful Group has released a statement confirming the rumours that the scheduled opening of Love Never Dies in November has been postponed until spring 2011. Here’s an extract from the statement outlining the reasons why:

The original opening date, planned for November 2010, was set before Lloyd Webber was diagnosed with prostate cancer last fall. Although the cancer has been eradicated, there have been post-operative problems. These have been aggravated by recent air travel and Lloyd Webber’s doctors have requested that he does not take any further long-haul flights for the time being and until the problem has been investigated. This prevents him attending auditions and being part of the pre-production process in New York on the original schedule

Andrew Lloyd Webber is currently appearing in the BBC television series, Over the Rainbow, in which he is looking to cast the lead role of Dorothy for his new production of The Wizard of Oz. Andrew performs weekly on live British television which was also a commitment undertaken before the prostate cancer was diagnosed. This complication, together with the doctors’ advice, has made it impossible to keep to the original Broadway schedule for Love Never Dies. Therefore, the decision has been made to move The Wizard of Oz forward in London and to schedule the Broadway premiere of Love Never Dies for 2011 thus allowing Andrew the freedom to travel to New York and oversee the audition and rehearsal process later in the year.

Lloyd Webber, in the same statement, comments on the situation:

I am extremely frustrated that I cannot travel to New York for the time being. I will be focusing my time on producing The Wizard of Oz in London now, and plan to be available for the creative process of bringing Love Never Dies to Broadway as soon as possible. I’m grateful that Jack and Jerry’s schedules can allow me to do this juggling act.

As reflected in Lloyd Webber’s statement, the new date takes into account the schedules of Jack O’Brien (the show’s director) and Jerry Mitchell (its choreographer). The show will still open in the Neil Simon Theatre as expected.

Whatever the reason, I hope that the extra time gained by postponing the opening will be used to fix the show’s many problems (some of which I’ve outlined here at Musical Cyberspace in a track-by-track commentary of the original (studio) cast recording.

INNER VOICES Off-Broadway

Inner VoicesTwo new one act musicals will premiere Off-Broadway tonight when previews start for Inner Voices: Solo Musicals. With opening night set for 6 April, the shows will play at 59E59 Theaters until April 24th under the auspices of Premieres in association with Primary Stages. Both musicals are directed by Jonathan Butterell.

The first of the two musicals is Mosaic features a book by Cheri Steinkellner and music by Georgia Stitt; both have collaborated on the lyrics for the piece. Heidi Blickenstaff plays Ruth, a woman who, according to press notes, is ‘blogging at the crossroads of birth, death, love and Diet Coke’. The show, which incorporates multi-media, shares with the audience a real-time half-hour in her life as she blogs on her MacBook.

Whida Peru: Resurrection Tangle, the second of the two musicals, has a book and lyrics by David Simpatico with music by Josh Schmidt. Performed by Judith Blazer, the show deals with the experiences of a Puerto Rican transsexual agoraphobic psychic on the eastern seaboard as she is forced to evaluate the quality of life, death and what lies in between for her.

This sounds like an interesting initiative and I hope both shows turn out to be as intriguing as they sound. This could prove to be a creatively lucrative concept for musical theatre, which so often flounders under the sheer size that seems to be generally expected of the genre.
