New Musicals of the 2011-2012 Season

Not all of these are 100% confirmed yet, but it seems as though this is what we can probably expect to see… so – to which new musical are you most looking forward? About which are you most intrigued? Which do you think will succeed? Which do you think will fail? Thoughts please.

Pity that Christopher Hampton is lowering himself – the last thing Broadway needs is another Euro-pop musical. *groans*

Ignoring the fact that you are most likely just being facetious; do you know the first thing about Rebecca? I doubt it, since it is not a “Euro-pop musical.”

Considering the way everybody of late has been complaining about the quality and style of what has been on Broadway in recent years, Rebecca is probably just what it needs. It’s based on a book too, not, heaven forfend, a movie. A dramatic musical that takes itself seriously, by well established writers who are lauded both popularly and critically with a well established track record of box office and critical hits. There are no gimmicks, just a story told by serious music. But no, Broadway much more needs home grown material like Spider-Man, doesn’t it? Maybe those around Broadway should learn to accept that they are not the centre of the universe, and many, many musicals of a high standard are created elsewhere, and should try not ignoring everything that isn’t from the great neon way.

So, I’ve said my piece for the moment. Your sarcasm was helpful. While Rebecca might not be the best musical from Europe (too much character detail explicitly explained), it is certainly better than a lot of musicals that are produced.

I’ve listened to the music. Overblown pop trash. That’s a slot on Broadway that could be used for budding theatre talents like Pasek and Paul.

I’m personally excited about Rebecca – not that I’ll be in NY to see it! 😦 It’s one of my favourite books and I saw a play of it before – I hope the music is good.

  5. Honestly, I think Christopher Hampton is great, but his track record with musicals indicates that his involvement in Rebecca is a definite step up. I mean, the last homegrown talent he worked with on a musical was Frank Wildhorn, and we all know how Dracula turned out.

Otherwise, everything Mungojerrie_rt said. I personally have more faith in this adaptation than I should.

If you want to rail on Euro-pop musicals, why don’t you have a go at Ghost? Or Spider-man? Those Irish boys just don’t know musical theatre…

What are your thoughts?
