PROMISES, PROMISES Opening Night

Rob Ashford’s Broadway revival of Promises, Promises, starring Sean Hayes and Kristen Chenoweth, opens on Broadway tonight. here are some clips from the show to celebrate the event:

I think the show promises pretty good things in terms of its design and staging – though I think the new “Turkey Lurkey” choreography doesn’t come close in comparison with Michael Bennett’s brilliant original staging of the song. Hayes looks like he’s going be really pleasant to watch on stage – and the supporting cast seems to hit the mark too. Only Chenoweth seems out of place and it’s very obvious that “I Say a Little Prayer” doesn’t belong in the show and is inappropriate for the character. I hope enough time has passed for audiences not to feel like the production is intended to be contemporary, and therefore dated, but rather to appreciate it as the entertaining period piece that the musical itself most certainly is.
