The RNT Production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

Thought for the day: I wish I could have seen the RNT production of A Little Night Music. I adore my cast recording of the show and, by all accounts, it seems that it was an amazing production. Another thought: besides the Kennedy Center Company, has Sean Mathias directed any other Sondheim musicals? I wish he had done the most recent Follies revival.

How amazing is this show? I cannot get enough of it at the moment. It has replaced Sweeney Todd on my iPod’s most played option.

I don’t have it, who else was in that production?

  3. Brianna Devlin says:

I’ve loved A Little Night Music for a while now and Judi Dench did a very good job in her portrayal of Desiree.

The cast recording of the RNT A Little Night Music is the holy grail of musical recordings. I don’t listen that much to it, though. I don’t want to grow tired of it.

My favorite A Little Night Music recording is the original London cast with Jean Simmons, Hermione Gingold and Joss Ackland. I adore it. Dench’s version is good. She herself is a brilliant, brilliant Desiree. I am not overly impressed with some of the cast though. Laurence Guittard, who was a wonderful Carl-Magnus in the original Broadway and film versions, is a decent Frederick but not a match for Len Cariou, Ackland or Andrews. Carl-Magnus and Anne are a bit weak. Sian Phillips however is a total delight as Mme Armfeldt. I like the way they combined the two versions of “The Glamorous Life” but hate the addition of “My Husband The Pig”.

I agree that the rest of the cast isn’t always brilliant, but Dench’s presence totally covers up for that.

The combined “The Glamorous Life” is interesting, if not exactly ideal. It must be terrificly fun to direct, but I don’t think it belongs in every production. “My Husband The Pig” was also only interesting and shouldn’t be part of ‘regular’ productions of the show.

I wish Sir Ian McKellen who was originally announced for Frederick could have done the role. McKellen and Dench together again would have been heaven!!

Don’t remind me!! That would have been amazing!

Judi Dench has taken A Little Night Music and has made it one of my favorite recordings to listen to. I simply cannot get sick of it. It’s fantastic. Judi is amazing.

  10. Patrick Dennis says:

I need to give this recording a more thorough listen. Dench’s “Send in the Clowns” is heartbreaking. I love the “Glamourous Life” and “The Miller’s Son”.
