Life of a Song: “Love Changes Everything”

I loved the Andrew Lloyd Webber: Masterpiece concert in Beijing – on DVD, that is; I obviously didn’t see it in China. (It’s a super DVD. You should buy it.) The young ensemble is incredibly talented and this number – one of the more low key moments of Masterpiece – shows them off rather sweetly. This isn’t my favourite arrangement of the song by any means, nor is this song one of the major highlights of the performance, but it was a nice breather in a concert that collected many of the big Lloyd Webber numbers together in one show.

“Love Changes Everything” is the kind of musical theatre song that works well for classical crossover artists. Opera boy band Il Divo collaborated with Michael Ball on the song on Ball’s recent Both Sides Now album. The result? Pure syrup. Hayley Westenra also went down this path with a similar result.
