Stephen Sondheim Award for Angela Lanbury

The Signature Theatre has created the Stephen Sondheim award, which will benefit Signature Theatre’s artistic, education, and community outreach programs. The award will be presented annually to an individual for his or her career contributions to interpreting, supporting, and collaborating on Stephen Sondheim’s music works. The first recipient of the award is Angela Lansbury, who was of course named as the ultimate Sondheim diva by yours truly in this blog ages ago.

Playbill offers the following reactions from Sondheim himself:

Angela Lansbury’s first appearance on the musical stage was in a show called Anyone Can Whistle, for which I wrote the score. That appearance was a gift to the musical theatre, although perhaps not such a gift to her, since the show only ran for nine performances. I am thrilled that Signature Theatre is helping me make it up to her by giving her the first Stephen Sondheim Award.

As well as from Signature Theatre’s Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer:

I’m thrilled that Angela will be the first recipient of the Stephen Sondheim Award, having appeared aurally on our stage as The Giant in Into the Woods. She is a major force in the American musical theatre and we look forward to saluting her endless talents.

This is wonderful. Lansbury is exactly the right person with whom to inaugurate this award.

NEWSFLASH: GODSPELL Revival on Broadway?

GODSPELL

To purchase the 2001 National Touring Cast Recording of GODSPELL, click on the image above.

Playbill and Variety are reporting that the oft-rumoured Godspell revival is aiming for a 2010-2011 season Broadway bow. The show was last making its way to Broadway (for the first time since 1977) in 2008, but that was canceled because of the ‘harsh reality of a slowing economy’. Both articles tell us that the show will be directed by Daniel Goldstein, who directed the Papermill production, that no casting has been announced and that a new producer (Ken Davenport) has picked up where Adam Epstein left off.

So what are your thoughts? Would a revival of Godspell be a
blessing? Or a curse? A good choice because, unlike some other shows, it hasn’t had a Broadway run in this decade? Or is it just something that doesn’t interest you either way?

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC Cast Recording

Playbill has announced that there will be a cast recording for this production and it will be recorded on 4 January 2010. Part of me does kinda wish the orchestrations were a little bigger, but it’s still good news to hear that we’ll have Angela Lansbury’s “Liasons” on permanent record.

NEWSFLASH: SILENCE! the Musical in London

SILENCE

Above: A poster for SILENCE!

Playbill has announced that Tory Ross and Miles Western will star as Clarice and Hannibal Lecter respectively in the first UK production of Silence!, which features a book by Hunter Bell and a score by Jon and Al Kaplan.

According to press materials, the songs were written in 2003 as a labor of love by the two brothers, who were struggling to break into L.A.’s competitive film composing industry. Their catchy tunes and outrageous lyrics gained a cult online following that culminated in the evolution of the stage show. The London production will feature additional numbers especially written for the U.K.

I must admit that I am not familiar with anything from this show at all. I wonder if it’s as campy as it sounds.
