Animal Crackers

Animal Crackers is a musical comedy with a book by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, feacturing a score by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. A vehicle for the Marx Brothers, the musical premiered in 1928 and was filmed in 1930. The show isn’t quite forgotten and seems to have been trotted out for a major staging once a decade since the 1980s. In typical 1920s musical comedy fashion, the show focuses on the antics of the Marx Brothers as the guests of a party, held at the estate of Mrs. Rittenhouse in honour of the African explorer Captain Spaulding, set out to find out who has stolen a celebrated sculpture. Chaos ensues. The film version of the show is considered to be a comedy classic and in the hands of the right company, the show offers an entertaining trip back to a time when musical comedy ruled the roost on Broadway.
